Inventive Images

We shared the memories of inventing images from clouds in the sky and made up a story out of the images. First, students created interesting texture background by blending paints. In the following class, they creatively invented visual images from the abstract painting.
Students were able to view their world with different perspectives and developed ability to find new images and meanings from the abstract painting.

Exploring Symmetry

BCC artists have been learning about symmetry. Students drew symmetrical robot drawing with a partner. They folded a paper in half and one person started drawing a little bit at a time on the left side of the paper. And then, the other person matched the left side drawing to make it symmetrical. I let them switch in the half way, so they all get a chance to be both creative and be able to practice the symmetrical drawing.

An example of the symmetrical robot drawing

In the following week, we looked at a butterfly picture and talked about its symmetry and the scale of the wings compared to the size of the bodies. We also noticed how the bottom wings appear to start from the middle of the top wing and not the body itself.
After the discussion, students drew a butterfly with black oil pastel. First, they traced around a popsicle stick to get an idea of how big to draw the body. Then students used their knowledge of symmetry to create patterns on both side of the wing. They painted the butterflies afterwards. I let them decide what they want to do with the background.

Some finished pieces. They are so beautiful!

Cityscape Collage

Grade 3 students created a collage of cityscape. First, we looked at the photograph of Seoul city and discussed the shapes and colors of the cityscape. We noticed that the architecture in Seoul was composed of various geometric shapes. We also found that Seoul had monochromatic color scheme of brown and gray. Using newspapers and brown papers, students created their own cityscape based on the discussion they had in the beginning of the class. Students added details such as windows, people, and cars, using black markers.

Their works are displayed together to make up one big cityscape in the multipurpose room on the fifth floor.

Complementary Colors Organic Shape Collage

Grade 3 artists have been studying shapes and color. For this collage project, they were inspired by the work of Elizabeth Murray. We noticed that she uses many organic shapes and they often have curved and irregular sides.

They also learned that the geometric shapes are simple shapes that we can easily recognize (square, triangle, and rectangle). Next, they learned about complementary colors. Complementary colors are across from each other on the color wheel. They noticed when two complementary colors are next to each other, they stand out. Students were asked to create organic shapes out of construction paper first. Once they had their shape, they used the complementary color to create patterns on top with collage.

Their finished pieces came out wonderfully and they are displayed in the hallway on the third floor.

Environment Day Art Activity

Friday Art Activity
The theme of April was "Environment and Social Responsibility".
BCC artists used recycled bottle caps to create collaborate pieces. They learned that they could create amazing artwork using recycled materials and were able to demonstrate the importance of recycling.

Here are photos of the art-making process.

Here are finished pieces of the day. They are displayed in the lobby and the library.
