Grade 1 & 2 - Under the Ocean

First and second graders watched a "Hooray for Fish" video by Lucy Cousins. They loved watching the video and got very excited to create their own fish. After painting the fish, they created the ocean scene where their fish could live in.

Grade 1 & 2 - Drawing with Pre-cut Shapes

The children created playful drawings using pre-cut shapes. I provided simple shapes of square and triangle and let them explore the shapes to create a new image.

Grade 1 & 2 - Fruit & Veggie Prints

First and second graders were introduced to a very simple printmaking technique. They dipped fruits and vegetables into paint and stamped them onto paper. The kids went wild for stamping and being messy with paints. The result came out beautiful. Check out their fabulous prints, displayed on the 7th floor!

Exploring Symmetry

BCC artists have been learning about symmetry. Students drew symmetrical robot drawing with a partner. They folded a paper in half and one person started drawing a little bit at a time on the left side of the paper. And then, the other person matched the left side drawing to make it symmetrical. I let them switch in the half way, so they all get a chance to be both creative and be able to practice the symmetrical drawing.

An example of the symmetrical robot drawing

In the following week, we looked at a butterfly picture and talked about its symmetry and the scale of the wings compared to the size of the bodies. We also noticed how the bottom wings appear to start from the middle of the top wing and not the body itself.
After the discussion, students drew a butterfly with black oil pastel. First, they traced around a popsicle stick to get an idea of how big to draw the body. Then students used their knowledge of symmetry to create patterns on both side of the wing. They painted the butterflies afterwards. I let them decide what they want to do with the background.

Some finished pieces. They are so beautiful!

Our First Printmaking Project

First and second graders learned collagraphy technique. It was our first time doing printmaking at BCC art studio. We learned the printing process and practiced the routine. First, we made a collage of a bug or an animal using think paper. The following week, we used our collage as a printing plate.  We inked the plate using a brayer, put a piece of paper on top of the plate and then burnished. It is always a fun surprise to see the prints.

Kandinsky Circle Drawing

Wassily Kandinsky | Circle Painting

Grade 1 and 2 students created abstract drawing inspired by Wassily Kandinsky's circle painting. They studied what "abstract" means with looking at Kandinsky's painting. We learned that it is an abstract piece of work because it does not depict something we immediately recognize. Students were asked to create their own abstract composition using circles. First, they worked on the composition by tracing a variety of circles. They were asked to think about placement (overlapping, touching, apart, inside) while creating their composition. Next, they added colors using construction paper crayons. Some decided to used solid color while others included pattern.

When we shared the work, we noticed that although we used the same shape and materials, each piece was unique. Beautiful work Grade 1 and 2!
